How I Found Purpose and Leadership Through EO
Haris Riyadi
An Unexpected Turn That Sparked Change
In 2019, I attended an EO Learning Event as a prospect, uncertain about what EO could offer me. At the time, my personal and professional life felt stagnant. I wasn’t growing, my friendships weren’t pushing me forward, and I felt isolated at work. After hesitating for a while, I decided to take the plunge and join EO in January 2020, just before the pandemic shook the world.
I can say with absolute certainty that EO changed my life. My business faced a 70% drop, the kids were home from school, and the world seemed to stand still. But the support from my EO family was unwavering. I found myself navigating the toughest of times with a group of people who truly cared. EO reignited my passion for life and business.
Learning to Lead: A Transformational Path
My first taste of leadership within EO came a year after joining, when I became Strategic Alliance Chair. That role led to positions as Learning Chair and Members’ Engagement Co-Chair, ultimately paving the way for me to become Chapter President in 2023. Today, I’m proud to serve as Area Director for EO APAC, where I oversee five chapters across Southeast Asia.
This leadership path taught me one of the most critical lessons: leadership isn’t just about telling people what to do—it’s about inspiring them to follow. Learning to lead by example has been the most transformative part of my EO journey, and it’s something I apply every day with my team, my family, and my peers.
Navigating Challenges and Discovering My Why
Leading a chapter full of dynamic, high-achieving individuals came with its challenges. As President, I had to manage the expectations of multiple stakeholders while keeping the organization moving forward. But what stands out the most was the camaraderie and learning from fellow leaders across the globe. These experiences shaped me into a more empathetic and strategic leader.
Personally, EO has had a profound impact on my relationships. I’ve learned to lead my two sons not by dictating but by guiding them to be the best versions of themselves. With my wife, we’ve strengthened our partnership as we embrace the challenges of parenting together.
Take the Next Step: Leadership in EO
If you’re contemplating a leadership role in EO, here’s my advice: Seize the opportunity. EO provides a safe, trusted space to grow as a leader and as a person. It’s the best leadership training I’ve ever experienced, and it will push you to become not just a better business leader, but a better human being.
